What grades and subjects do you support?
S.M.A.R.T. Tutoring provides personalized academic tutoring for elementary (Kindergarten – Grade 8) and high school students (Grades 9-12). Our tutors support core subjects including math, reading, and writing while aligning instruction with the Ontario curriculum.
Where do tutoring sessions take place?
Tutoring sessions typically take place in the student’s home or at a local public library. This allows students to learn in a comfortable and familiar environment while receiving focused academic support.
Do you offer tutoring in Barrie and surrounding communities?

Who are your tutors?
Our tutors are Ontario Certified Teachers and experienced educators who specialize in helping students strengthen academic skills and build confidence.
How are students matched with tutors?
Students are matched with tutors based on grade level, subject needs, learning style, and location. Our goal is to ensure a strong tutor-student match that supports both academic progress and student confidence.
How often should my child attend tutoring?
Most students attend one session per week, although some students benefit from additional sessions depending on their goals or upcoming assessments.
How long does it take to see improvement with tutoring?
Every student learns at their own pace. Many families begin to notice improvements in confidence, understanding, and study habits within the first few weeks of consistent tutoring. Academic progress builds over time as foundational skills strengthen.
Is tutoring only for students who are struggling?
No. Tutoring can support students at all academic levels. Some students attend tutoring to close learning gaps, while others use tutoring to strengthen academic skills, prepare for tests, or stay ahead in school.
Scheduling and Policies
How do we get started with tutoring?
The first step is a consultation to discuss your child’s needs, goals, and current challenges. From there, we match your child with an appropriate tutor and schedule sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
Students and tutors may cancel a session by providing 24 hours’ notice whenever possible. Sessions cancelled without appropriate notice may be forfeited.
What happens if a tutor cancels a session?
If a tutor cancels a session, the session will be rescheduled within seven (7) days whenever possible.
Do you require long-term contracts?
We do not require long-term contracts. However, students are expected to attend weekly scheduled sessions consistently to support meaningful academic progress.
Firefighter Aptitude Test Preparation
Do you offer firefighter aptitude test preparation?
Yes. Lou-Anne works directly with firefighter candidates preparing for written aptitude tests used during municipal and regional firefighter recruitment processes. Drawing on over 13 years of experience, she provides structured, targeted preparation that mirrors the exact skills assessed on firefighter exams, including reading comprehension, firefighter math, and human relations scenarios. Candidates benefit from assessments, practice tests, and individualized coaching designed to maximize test performance and improve ranking in the recruitment process.
What is a firefighter aptitude test?
A firefighter aptitude test is a written assessment used by fire departments during recruitment to evaluate the skills required for success in firefighter training and emergency response decision-making. These tests measure reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and human relations skills (critical for both testing success and on-the-job performance).
Some of the most commonly used firefighter aptitude tests in Canada and the U.S. include:
- Cooperative Personnel Services Test (CPS) / Administered by Firefighter Services of Ontario (FSO)
- Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) / Administered by Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI)
- FPSI Comprehensive Examination Battery (CEB)
- FPSI National Firefighter Selection Test (NFST)
- FireTEAM/ Administered by National Testing Network (NTN)
- Firefighter Selection Test (FST)
- OS Gledhill / Shaw exams
While formats and names may vary, all of these tests evaluate the same core skills: reading comprehension, firefighter math, and human relations/problem-solving. Preparing in advance with targeted practice and diagnostics significantly improves performance and increases a candidate’s ranking in competitive recruitment processes.
Who should enroll in firefighter test preparation?
Firefighter test preparation is designed for:
- first-time firefighter applicants
- candidates preparing to rewrite a firefighter aptitude test
- applicants who want to improve their ranking during recruitment
How can I prepare for a firefighter aptitude test?
Preparing for a firefighter aptitude test involves practicing the types of questions commonly used in firefighter recruitment exams. Preparation often includes reading comprehension practice, firefighter math questions, human relations scenarios, and timed practice tests.
Is the firefighter aptitude test difficult?
The firefighter aptitude test can be challenging because it evaluates speed, accuracy, and decision-making under time pressure. Many candidates benefit from structured practice before writing the test.
Do you offer firefighter practice tests?
Yes. Candidates have access to practice questions, diagnostics, and structured preparation materials designed to reflect the types of questions commonly found on firefighter aptitude tests.
